Maserati Quattroporte EV: Here’s all we know about it in 2023

The new Maserati Quattroporte EV, which will replace the current V8 car and its Ghibli sibling as a smaller, more opulent, and all-electric vehicle, is about to receive final approval before going on sale in 2024. The Quattroporte Folgore, based on the STLA architecture that will support all future EVs from Maserati (and the majority of models from its 13 Stellantis sibling brands), will be the brand’s third electric vehicle but its first to not be available with a combustion engine. As a result, it will be crucial in determining how the brand develops in the future as it works to eliminate combustion power by 2030 of which the Maserati Quattroporte EV is a major starting point.

CEO Davide Grasso gave Autocar the first information about Maserati’s highly anticipated Porsche Taycan rival, saying it is “unmistakably a Maserati” but also “such a disruptive design project,” implying it will draw design cues from the most recent Granturismo and Grecale but adopt a radical new appearance defined by its electric underpinnings, which is likely to be primarily influenced by a focus on aerodynamic efficiency.

While Grasso refrained from mentioning any specific competitors, he did say that the new Maserati Quattroporte EV saloon can stand out thanks to its “Italian flair” and overt luxury appeal. These attributes will be essential in establishing the company’s standing as a legitimate luxury brand and helping it to maintain the healthy profit margins it achieved in 2022.

As Maserati shifts away from focusing on volume sales in the mainstream executive segment, the new saloon will lean more towards the Quattroporte end of the spectrum than the Maserati Ghibli and come with a lofty price to match.

Grasso cited the Grecale as an excellent illustration of how to transform Maserati’s reputation for luxury into a more approachable, volume-friendly package. He emphasised its driver-focused cockpit, ample rear leg room, and meticulous attention to detail as competitive advantages.

All indications point to the Maserati Quattroporte EV being a sibling of Alfa Romeo’s forthcoming electric Giulia, which is based on the STLA Medium mid-sized platform and may share its promised 1000bhp range-topping powertrain with a fearsome Trofeo variant.

Given that the new Maserati Quattroporte EV will only be offered in electric form (the Granturismo Folgore will cost £200,000), positioning also points to a target price of about £150,000.
