Tata Motors MD: Improvement in Charging Infrastructure can reduce range anxiety for EVs
  • Tata Motors aims to achieve zero net emissions by 2045 and the giant automobile company is working day and night to reach this target.
    • Tata Motors MD Shailesh Chandra stated that the transition from traditional fuels to the EV ecosystem is ‘inevitable.’
    • Chandra said, “I think the solution lies in the charging infra and ability to charge cars fast, and that also mainly on the highways”.

Improvement in charging infrastructure can turn out to be the main solution for reducing range anxiety for EVs: Tata Motors MD Shailesh Chandra said in a conversation at the Auto Expo – The Motor Show 2023. Chandra said, “I think the solution lies in the charging infra and ability to charge cars fast, and that also mainly on the highways”.

“..Having seen that in the last 2 to 3 years, or last 1 year, there are 3000 chargers which have been put which was not the case 4-5 years back. And not only has Tata Power started putting these public chargers but now, there are many regional players and start-ups which are coming into this space. So in 2-3 years, I think the situation will be very different” he added.

Tata Motors aims to achieve zero net emissions by 2045 and the giant automobile company is working day and night to reach this target.

“Our goal is to achieve net zero emissions by 2045 and Tata Motors is driving this change at great speed across the board,” says N Chandrasekaran, executive chairman, of Tata Sons and chairman, Tata Motors.

“For us it is not only about electric vehicles, it is about every new technology that can drive this change to deliver zero carbon emission travel and at the same time give customers a range of choices as well as driving comfort,” the Tata Sons chief says.

Chandra stated in this conversation that the transition from traditional fuels to the EV world is ‘inevitable’, and that the world for the automobile company after achieving its net zero targets would be ‘fully electric’.

“…Globally also it is acknowledged that given that the automotive industry has a significant contribution to the emissions, so it has to also move towards zero-emission technology very fast,” he said, noting that in Europe and UK, the timeline to achieve the net zero target is defined aggressively by 2035.

Tata Motors MD: Improvement in Charging Infrastructure can reduce range anxiety for EVs

Tata Motors has unveiled a total of 14 different vehicles at the Auto Expo 2023 which includes 4 natural gas-powered models, 2 fuel agonistic, new generation architectures, 5 BEVs (Battery Electric Vehicles), 2 Hydrogen fuel electric vehicles and 1 hydrogen internal combustion engine vehicle.

Talking about the affordability of Tata’s EV products, Chandra said, “If you see the median prices of the cars sold in the country, it is roughly 9-9.5 lakh. So that’s the sweet spot where the demand of the PV industry is there”.

“As far as mainstreaming of EV products is concerned, I think we have come to some distance in terms of bringing a product which can do that” he added, referring to the Tata Tiago EV.

Highlighting the company’s launches, Chandra stressed that the products will cover the entire spectrum of various price points and therefore, people with different affordability levels can buy a car and join the EV ecosystem.

Tata Group is eyeing to set up EV Battery Manufacturing plants in India and Europe

Tata Group is considering establishing plants in India and Europe to manufacture battery cells for Electric Vehicles (EVs). With 50,000 electric vehicle sales to date, India’s Tata Motors dominates the country’s EV market and has announced plans to launch ten electric vehicles by March 2026. Electric vehicles are expected to account for a quarter of total sales by 2025, up from around 8% now.

Tata Motors’ P.B. Balaji said on the sidelines of India’s Auto Expo car show in Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh, that localising cell manufacturing for EV batteries is critical to increasing local components in electric cars and will also help the automaker develop a local supply chain.

Tata Group is considering two production bases, one of which is in Europe, to meet the battery cell needs of its luxury car unit Jaguar Land Rover, which has a manufacturing facility there.

Balaji stated that its parent company Tata Sons will invest in cell manufacturing, but did not specify the amount or timeline. India’s car market, which is set to become the world’s third largest, is tiny in comparison to its population, with electric models accounting for only 1% of total car sales of about 3.8 million last year, but the government hopes to increase this to 30% by 2030.

The Indian conglomerate expects its EV business to be cash flow positive by 2025, and the company is also focused on increasing profitability, according to Balaji. Tata’s new models will have a longer driving range and higher price points as the company seeks to maintain its lead at a time when rivals such as Mahindra & Mahindra, Warren Buffet-backed BYD, and SAIC Motor’s MG Motors are planning EV launches.

EV infrastructure to boom in the country, Citroen India and Jio-Bp are all set to team up, signs strategic partnership
Photo by Ed Harvey on Pexels.com

As different automobile companies are working round the clock to bring their best models to the electric vehicle (EV) market, the need for building EV infrastructure in the country is rising too. The automotive industry has started to make revolutionary changes by manufacturing and investing more time and money into the electric vehicle sector.

The days of using internal combustion engine (ICE)-powered vehicles seem to be coming to an end. This might take time but it has to definitely transform itself to meet the current times where each and every country is coming together and joining hands to save and protect our planet and become more responsible towards the planet we are dwelling in.

EV Infrastructure on the rise in the country

With various major automobile giants and EV startups working extensively on electric vehicles, the growth of EVs has been immense in the last five years. However, this sale is still less than 1 percent and has a scope for growth and a lot of hurdles to overcome. One such hurdle is to build more and more EV infrastructure so that common people can seemingly make a shift in their choice of purchasing their dream car.

In order to develop EV infrastructure and services across the country, Citroen India has established a strategic collaboration with Jio-BP, a fuels and mobility joint venture between Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) and BP.

“Jio-bp will install DC fast chargers across Citroen’s key dealership network and workshops across the country in phases,” the release said.

These chargers will boost the adoption of electric vehicles among customers and will gradually remove the hurdles of the EV sector and more enhancement can be made in building the EV charging stations and EV infrastructure.

Citroen India and Jio-Bp are all set to team up, sign a strategic partnership

These chargers will also be open to the entire universe of EV car customers to help boost EV adoption among consumers, it added. With the New Citroen e-C3 All Electric scheduled for launch in Q1 2023, “this partnership will ensure Jio-bp’s charging infrastructure network is accessible via the My Citroen Connect app”, the joint statement further said.

Jio-Bp is currently operating a network of EV charging and swapping stations under the Jio-Bp pulse brand. This partnership shall ensure that Jio-Bp’s charging infrastructure facility is accessible via its My Citroen app. This app will help customers easily locate the charging stations within their vicinity, reducing the fear of running out of charge and not getting stuck in the middle of the road.

It is aiming to set up multiple charging facilities at crucial points which can be easily accessed, ensuring smooth intra-city and inter-city travel for EV owners, thereby encouraging more and more people to join the EV clan and making our planet happy.

Jio-Bp has previously made a pact with Mahindra and Mahindra to set up a charging network for its upcoming electric SUVs. In April last year, Jio-bp and TVS announced a collaboration between them to create a public EV charging infrastructure for electric two-wheelers and three-wheelers.

Jio-bp had also signed a pact with food delivery giant Zomato in June, last year, helping the food giant to achieve a 100 percent electric vehicle fleet.

Tata Motors is on its way to bringing back the iconic Tata Sierra as a standalone EV; will go on sale by 2025!

Tata Motors is working, researching and finding new ways to imbibe three new technologies – electric batteries, hydrogen fuel cells and hydrogen internal combustion engine (ICE) to achieve its ambitious net-zero emissions target by 2045. The company is also planning to reach a 100 per cent renewable energy goal by the end of this decade.

“Battery electric, hydrogen fuel cell, and hydrogen ICE could be the three technologies which have the potential of being emission-free. That is what we will have to work towards,” said Girish Wagh, president, of Tata Motors, on the sidelines of Auto Expo 2023.

India’s car market is soon to be the third largest in the world, with electric models making up just 1 percent of total car sales of about 38 lakh last year but the government wants to grow this to 30 percent by 2030.

The native automobile company is already the largest EV manufacturer in the passenger vehicle sector in the country and is aiming to bring a revolutionary change whose impact and dominance will be experienced all over the world. Tata Motors is working rigorously and has revealed two pre-production concepts of the Sierra Electric SUV and Harrier EV at the 2023 Auto Expo.

Tata Sierra EV- What’s new in store for us this time?

This is not the first time that the Tata Sierra is being showcased at the Auto Expo by the giant automobile company. Tata Sierra started its journey back in the 1990s as a three door sporting utility vehicle and the brand name is still well known among its fan even today. Tata Motors had unveiled a concept model of Tata Sierra in 2020 and now in 2023, we get to check the all new Tata Sierra with its new updates and features.

The design has been kept clean, the front end sports conventional surfaces but still looks impressive and dazzling with a slim LED light array at the top bar. The design of the rear has been kept minimal and very sleek, and the LED light bar at the rear has showcased a neat and discreet Sierra lettering.

At the side, we have regular doors and feature the conventional five-door layout with a flush door handle system. Tata designers have managed to keep the look of the original car by keeping the signature fixed glass house that is curved all the way upto the roof.

Tata Motors has not revealed the technical specifications but it is expected to deliver a range of around 500 km. The alloy-finished wheels of the car look very striking, accompanied by the advanced sports tyre.

It has a two-spoke steering wheel, with a large Infotainment screen. The car is spacious and the front seats get their own set of resting arms and are larger than the previous version. It has a clean centre console with a large charging pad.

In the back seat, there is a massive headrest given for the passengers enjoying their ride in the backseat. The backseats resemble Ottoman-type seating and seem very comfortable. As it is an electric vehicle, it has a flat floor offering ample amount of space and comfort for its users.

The interior of the car portrays a luxurious image but as it is a Sierra, it will have some off-roading capabilities too if needed. There are three parking sensors with no tailpipes as it is an EV. It also has nice large and stout rocker panels too.

Tata Sierra EVPlatform and Engine:

Tata’s upcoming SUV will be based on the Sigma platform, an evolved version of the carmaker’s ALFA-ARC structure. The SUV will measure around 4.4 metres long, falling under the compact SUV space, comprising models such as the Hyundai CretaKia SeltosMaruti Grand Vitara and Toyota Hyryder. The Sierra is going to offer a plethora of powertrains, including ICE and all-electric feature options.

The car is expected to hit the showrooms in 2025. By the time, we enter the year 2025, the EV market will definitely progress and advance more in terms of technology and innovation and we can enjoy this dream car which will be ready to hit the roads and contribute to the EV automobile industry.
