Tata’s primary volume generators, the Nexon and Tata Punch, have achieved remarkable production milestones. The Nexon has successfully crossed the 500,000 production mark, while the Punch has recently celebrated reaching 200,000 units. Given the Punch’s surging popularity, it seems like the perfect time to introduce an electric version of the car. Additionally, Tata is also planning to offer a CNG option for the Punch.
Recent sightings of the Tata Punch Electric on a tow truck reveal that it retains the same exterior profile as its internal combustion engine (ICE) counterpart, including identical alloy wheels. The tightly-fitting camouflage indicates that the front of the car remains unchanged, suggesting that the charging port will likely be located in the same spot as the fuel tank lid of the ICE version. This strategy helps streamline the conversion process from an ICE-based car to an electric car, similar to what has been done with the Nexon EV and Tiago EV.
However, the Tata Punch Electric is expected to come with some new features.
The test mule showcases rear disc brakes, a departure from the front disc and rear drum brake setup found in the ICE Punch. Inside the car, the presence of a rotary dial suggests that the EV version may incorporate an electronic parking brake, a feature already available in the Nexon EV Max. This electronic parking brake operates automatically and can also be engaged and disengaged manually.
The interior of the Tata Punch Electric appears to be largely similar to that of the ICE Punch. It features a floating 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system, likely sourced from Harman, equipped with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Other interior features that are expected to carry over from the ICE Punch include a 7-inch TFT instrument cluster, automatic climate control, a flat-bottom steering wheel, and premium upholstery. In terms of safety, the Tata Punch Electric is likely to retain key features such as a reverse parking camera, front fog lamps with cornering function, automatic headlamps, rain-sensing wipers, ABS and EBD with brake sway control, and rear defogger.
While official details are not yet available, it is speculated that the Punch Electric may offer a range of around 300 km. By way of comparison, the Tiago EV is available in two variants, one with a range of 250 km and the other with a range of 315 km. Recently launched electric models like the MG Comet EV offer a range of 230 km, while the Citroen eC3 boasts a range of 320 km. The Punch Electric is expected to come with drive modes such as Eco, City, and Sport, and it may utilize battery packs similar to those used in the Tiago EV.
