At the recent WWDC24 (World Wide Developer Conference), the multinational tech giant Apple Inc. unveiled its future strategy for software, integration, and other areas. Among these was Apple CarPlay, which will soon undergo a significant redesign. Apple CarPlay, which was first shown in 2022, is almost ready to move into its next version. This is what to anticipate.

What is Next-Gen Apple CarPlay?

Our culture has completely transformed since the invention of computers and, more recently, cell phones, and we now coexist. This has also been the case with car ownership, as infotainment, connectivity, and instrumentation are quickly rising to the top of the priority list. The company has not yet disclosed a release date for this next-generation Apple CarPlay. However, at WWDC24, the business gave a sneak peek at what their design team had been working on. Ben Crick, the creator of the Apple CarPlay Human Interface, outlined every option available with the new CarPlay system, including countless ways to customize it.

The business hopes to provide more customisation and versatility with the new Apple CarPlay. Next-generation CarPlay will take over the instruments and infotainment screens, as well as any third or fourth displays if fitted in the vehicle when it is linked to an iOS device (Apple iPhone).

The goal is to provide automobile owners with a fully customizable and adaptable infotainment and instrument experience that is seamless. For instance, standard speed, odo, and tacho values can be shown on the instrument screen in gauge, gauge with ticks, bars, and several more forms. Additionally, Apple promises dynamic data, guaranteeing consumers the greatest possible experience based on several aspects.

Additionally, if the car satisfies the requirements, the screen will enable the integration of navigation data, ADAS-related information, camera controls, climate management, vehicular statistics like TPMS, and even display clusters targeted on EVs, off-roading, or racing. Next-generation Apple CarPlay’s modular and expandable design will guarantee compatibility with all screen sizes and shapes. OEMs will be able to display information directly on the screens, such as the name or image of the vehicle.

How do brands accept it?

The upcoming Apple CarPlay technology will be specifically designed for each car and integrate seamlessly with its makers. These original equipment manufacturers will need to collaborate with the Apple Team to design a special Apple CarPlay configuration for a given head unit and the car in which it will be installed.

How automakers will react to Apple’s aim of revolutionizing the in-car infotainment and instrumentation experience is still up in the air. As of the writing of this article, only Porsche and Aston Martin have confirmed partnerships with Apple to integrate the upcoming Apple CarPlay. In the near future, more OEMs may declare their interest in Apple’s new system.

Apple might have a big influence on an OEM’s decision to adopt this technology, given the amount of power it will have over car informatics. It would also be fascinating to observe how Google reacts to this and what adjustments they make to Android Auto in order to improve the in-car instrument panel and infotainment system.
