JLR approaches Tata’s Agratas for EV batteries

The British luxury car division of Tata Motors, Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), has outlined a clear path to net zero carbon emissions. Range Rover will introduce its first battery-powered vehicle in 2024, and by 2025, the Jaguar brand will only produce electric vehicles.

JLR wants to switch to an electric car powertrain for all of its products or brands. Before achieving its objective of net zero carbon emission by 2039, it is sure of achieving zero tailpipe emissions by 2036.

The company intends to establish a strategic alliance in the semiconductor industry and is seeking a greater level of involvement at the top management. According to the presentation, JLR intends to create new business models and establish direct connections between CEOs.

In addition to the new Tata Agratas cell manufacturing company, for which the Group has committed over US$ 1.3 billion, JLR will take advantage of synergies across 10 Tata Group verticals. Agratas wants to produce cells on a big scale and will build a world-class gigafactory in Gujarat to do it. It has created a cutting-edge unified prismatic cell technology that can be used with both nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) and lithium-ion phosphate (LFP) chemistries. With Jaguar Land Rover and Tata Motors as their two main anchor clients, Agratas will handle end-to-end cell design, validation, manufacture, and industrialization of its technology. JLR stated on Monday during its Investor Day presentation in London.

The collaboration with Tata Technologies will hasten the industrial plan of JLR’s digital transformation. According to corporate management, electrification is definitely accelerating, and Jaguar Land Rover is shifting in accordance with that trend. The company’s chief commercial officer highlighted the portfolio expansion at JLR by stating that by FY29, pure electric vehicles will make up 80% of the company’s portfolio.
