A Tata Nexon EV owner in India found a solution to this problem by charging his vehicle with solar power, allowing him to drive it for free. Electric cars are becoming more popular in India, but limited charging infrastructure remains a barrier. Despite being more expensive than conventional ICE vehicles, electric vehicles can be less expensive to operate and maintain.
The SOLAR KART YouTube channel has posted a video about a Kerala-based doctor who recently purchased a Tata Nexon EV.
The doctor has solar panels installed at his home, allowing him to power his car with the electricity generated by them, according to the video. As a result, he has no operating expenses for his vehicle. The video discusses the benefits of investing in both solar panels and electric vehicles. The doctor explains that recharging his Tata Nexon EV costs him nothing because he has solar panels installed at his home that generate enough electricity to power both his house and car. Electric cars are significantly less expensive to operate than traditional fuel-powered vehicles.
The video illustrates this point by stating that running a petrol car can cost as much as INR 6 lakhs over an 8-year period, whereas electric cars can cost as little as INR 1 lakh over the same time period, a significant difference. The doctor also mentions that the excess electricity generated by his solar panels is sold to the state power company. He only needs to charge his car once a week, which takes about 30 units of electricity and has a range of about 250 kilometres. Furthermore, electric vehicles require less frequent servicing than petrol or diesel vehicles, resulting in additional cost savings.
The doctor is pleased with his decision to install solar panels and buy an electric car. Previously, he charged his Tata Nexon EV with a regular electric connection, incurring some costs. However, thanks to solar panels, he can now operate a zero-emission vehicle for free, save for a 5% road tax, which is still lower than that of petrol and diesel vehicles.
The Tata Nexon EV costs between Rs 14.29 lakh and Rs 16.70 lakh. The top-spec XZ Plus and XZ Plus Lux are available in a ‘Black Edition,’ which costs around Rs 20,000 more than their respective variants.
