Toyota funds a new EV charging system

Toyota Motor North America and IONNA jointly announced today that Toyota has become an investor in IONNA together with seven other automakers, with the goal of facilitating the expansion of IONNA‘s powerful battery electric vehicle (BEV) charging network throughout North America. Customers of Toyota and Lexus now have access to the public DC fast charger network that IONNA plans to roll out later this year. By 2030, IONNA wants to have installed at least 30,000 charging stations across North America. To accommodate BEV drivers, these stations will have both NACS and CCS connectors.

What are Toyota officials saying?

“We are thrilled to declare our backing of IONNA for the distribution of DC fast chargers across the United States and Canada,” stated Toyota Motor North America President and CEO Ted Ogawa. “We think this will help customers trust in the technology and encourage the use of BEVs. In addition, it will give our Toyota and Lexus customers access to IONNA’s rapidly expanding North American charging network.”

Ensuring that charging stations offer guests convenience and facilities in addition to car charging is in line with IONNA’s commitment to the comprehensive customer experience and the company’s vision. IONNA intends to begin the construction of more DC fast charging stations during the course of the next ten years, with the first batch scheduled to be online in 2024.

“We are thrilled to have Toyota join our expanding IONNA family,” IONNA CEO Seth Cutler stated. “Their outlook on electric mobility in North America is a wonderful fit with our goal of pushing the envelope for the best possible quality, dependability, and customer experience. This collaboration is a major step forward in our shared goal of revolutionizing EV charging and driving the uptake of sustainable mobility in North America.

The company’s decision to back IONNA is a significant one, since the eight OEMs that are currently involved in the partnership and collaborative effort to invest in the expansion of public charging, highlight the intended statewide network. Following the announcements of support from BMW, GM, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes-Benz, and Stellantis, Toyota is the latest automaker to join the EV charging company.
