Mahindra’s “Born Electric” SUVs Will Use Volkswagen EV Components

Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. (M&M) and the Volkswagen Group have teamed up to concentrate on India’s electric vehicle market going forward. Collaboration between the companies on the parts of Volkswagen’s MEB for Maindra’s specially designed electric platform, INGLO, is ensured by the supply agreement that the brands signed. Electric components such as unified cells are also covered.

According to the brands, this partnership will be a significant step in the direction of realizing the nation’s common goal of electric mobility. Notably, the partnership strengthens the bonds that have existed between the brands since 2022. Furthermore, both businesses intend to assess the possibility of future collaborative expansion.

Mahindra’s partnership with Volkswagen is a fundamental part of its battery strategy, enabling it to implement the unified cell concept for the first time as an external manufacturer. It is anticipated that this collaboration will significantly enhance India’s e-mobility landscape.

Mahindra’s EV sales in India

In 2023, more than five million new automobiles were sold in India, making it one of the largest automotive markets in the world. Mahindra intends to introduce five all-electric SUVs by the end of December 2024. The new BE brand will be used to market these new electric cars. Furthermore, the cars will cater to various market categories with a variety of body shapes, from coupe-SUVs to sub-4m SUVs.

The company only offers the XUV400 as its only electric SUV currently available for purchase. Volkswagen’s MEB platform and its components are used by other automakers like Ford and Mahindra, as well as by its own brands, Volkswagen, Audi, Skoda, and SEAT/CUPRA. In partnership with Skoda Auto Volkswagen India Pvt. Ltd., Volkswagen Group Technology and its “Platform Business” unit are in charge of the cooperation with Mahindra.
