Tata Motors’ 2025 EV Revolution: Harrier.ev & Sierra.ev Unveiled

Tata Motors, a pioneer in India’s electric vehicle (EV) revolution, is charging ahead with optimism despite a challenging year for the EV market in 2024. With a remarkable 48% year-on-year (YoY) growth in EV sales during FY24, the company is setting the stage for an even brighter 2025. Vivek Srivatsa, Chief Commercial Officer of Tata Passenger Electric Mobility (TPEM), shared exclusive insights with Businessline about the company’s ambitious plans, including the much-anticipated production debuts of the Harrier.ev and Sierra.ev in 2025.

Tata Motors’ EV Journey in 2024: A Year of Resilience and Innovation

While the Indian EV market faced a slowdown in 2024, Tata Motors stood out as a beacon of growth and innovation. The year began with the launch of the Acti.ev platform (Advanced Connected Tech-Intelligent Electric Vehicle), a cutting-edge architecture that will underpin all future EVs from Tata Motors. The first model to leverage this platform, the Punch.ev, has been a game-changer, democratizing EV ownership in India by offering premium features at an accessible price point.

The Punch.ev has quickly gained popularity, accounting for 11% of total Punch sales between January and November 2024. Meanwhile, Tata Motors also refreshed its flagship Nexon.ev lineup with the introduction of the Nexon.ev 45 and the Nexon.ev Red Hot #DARK Edition, featuring a larger 45-kWh battery, extended range, and faster charging capabilities. These updates have made the Nexon.ev a compelling alternative to its internal combustion engine (ICE) counterpart, further driving EV adoption.

In addition to product innovation, Tata Motors has been instrumental in expanding India’s EV ecosystem. Through partnerships with Shell and HPCL, the company is working to establish over 22,000 charging points across the country within the next 12-18 months, ensuring a robust infrastructure to support the growing EV community.

2025: A Year of Big Launches and Bigger Goals

Tata Motors is gearing up for a landmark year in 2025 with the production debuts of the Harrier.ev and Sierra.ev. These models are expected to set new benchmarks in the Indian EV market, combining cutting-edge technology with Tata’s signature design and performance.

Reflecting on the company’s journey, Srivatsa emphasized the groundwork laid over the past five years to nurture the EV ecosystem. From launching innovative products to building EV-specific showrooms and raising consumer awareness, Tata Motors has been at the forefront of India’s transition to sustainable mobility.

Will the EV Slowdown Persist in 2025?

Despite the global headwinds that impacted EV sales in 2024, Tata Motors remains confident about the future. Srivatsa highlighted that EVs are still a relatively new technology, making them more susceptible to market fluctuations. However, the Indian market continues to show resilience and growth potential.

By the end of FY25, the Indian EV industry is projected to achieve sales of 1,30,000 to 1,50,000 units, driven by increased consumer awareness, supportive government policies, and a strengthened charging infrastructure. Encouragingly, the first half of FY25 has already recorded growth compared to the same period in FY24, signaling rising consumer confidence in EVs.

Currently, EVs account for over 12% of Tata Motors’ passenger vehicle portfolio, and the company is targeting 30% EV penetration by 2030. To achieve this, Tata Motors is collaborating with stakeholders across the value chain, including automakers, government bodies, and infrastructure providers, to address challenges and sustain momentum in the EV segment.

Understanding the Evolving EV Consumer

The profile of the Indian EV buyer is evolving rapidly. Unlike traditional ICE customers, EV buyers are more engaged and demand frequent interaction with manufacturers. They actively participate in building EV communities and often become brand ambassadors, promoting the technology and the brand without financial incentives.

This shift in consumer behavior underscores the importance of creating a seamless and engaging ownership experience, which Tata Motors is addressing through initiatives like exclusive EV showrooms and community-building efforts.

Expanding the EV Network: Tata Motors’ 2025 Roadmap

In 2024, Tata Motors opened six exclusive EV showrooms across India, with locations in Gurugram, Kochi, Thrissur, and Kannur. Looking ahead, the company plans to scale this network in 2025, aligning its expansion strategy with the pace of EV adoption in different regions.

These showrooms are more than just retail spaces—they are hubs for educating consumers about EV technology, showcasing Tata’s growing portfolio, and fostering a sense of community among EV owners.

The Road Ahead: Driving India’s EV Revolution

Tata Motors’ unwavering commitment to innovation, infrastructure development, and consumer engagement positions it as a leader in India’s EV revolution. With the launch of the Harrier.ev and Sierra.ev, a robust charging network, and a clear vision for the future, the company is poised to accelerate EV adoption in 2025 and beyond.

As India moves towards a greener, more sustainable future, Tata Motors is not just keeping pace—it’s leading the charge.
