JLR shifts focus to PHEVs during a global decline in EV sales

An ambitious plan to fully electrify the Jaguar brand starting in 2025 and launch up to six new EVs under the Land Rover brand by 2026 was unveiled by JLR back in 2021. Nevertheless, JLR has reversed course and is now delaying the launch of EVs in favor of temporarily increasing the number of plug-in hybrids, despite a downturn in the demand for EVs around the world.

Upcoming electrified Land Rover lineup

During a recent earnings conference call, JLR said that while the rate of growth of electric vehicles (EVs) has slowed, sales of its plug-in hybrid (PHEV) models increased 68% to 45,224 units in Europe in 2023.JLR has now decided to put more of an emphasis on PHEVs, according to a report by Automotive News Europe.

Adrian Mardell, CEO of Jaguar Land Rover, stated, “What you have seen from other OEMs is that the race to BEV is starting to stutter a little.” The level of acceptance for PHEVs has surprised me. In the interim, we are putting a lot of effort into expanding the supply of PHEVs. At present, plug-in hybrid versions are available for every Land Rover vehicle, with the exception of the Discovery.

Land Rover is still on pace to launch its first all-electric SUV, the Range Rover, even if it has cut the number of EVs it plans to deploy by 2026. The automaker has already received over 16,000 reservations. The Range Rover Sport electric variant will come next, and JLR’s Modular Longitudinal Architecture (MLA) base will support both of them.

Two more compact EVs that are supported by JLR’s EMA platform will come after these. These cars are yet unknown, but it’s likely that they will be the Velar and Evoque’s all-electric replacements. Although it won’t be released for another long time, a Defender EV is also planned.

Upcoming electric JLR lineup

While this is going on, Jaguar will keep concentrating on becoming an electric-only brand. After rebranding, the company plans to introduce an all-electric, four-door GT to compete with the Porsche Taycan, which will be followed by a smaller, second EV. The F-Pace, F-Type, and E-Pace, along with the I-Pace, are the only Jaguar ICE cars that will remain in production after the current generation. JLR continues to aim for 60% of sales to be electric vehicles by 2030, with a goal of 100% by 2036.
