Bajaj Sunny to return as an electric vehicle: Price under Rs. 1 lakh?

The Sunny brand will be brought back to life by a new electric scooter being developed by Bajaj, a two-wheeler manufacturer located in Pune. Midway through the 1990s, the Bajaj Sunny, a well-liked 60cc two-stroke scooter, was offered for sale in India. The brightly colored design, rounded headlamp, thin floorboard, and three-spoke alloy wheels were among its best features.

A new Bajaj Sunny electric scooter prototype that is completely camouflaged was recently seen testing in Pune. The test mule demonstrated that much of the original scooter’s design cues, including the wide front fender, the boxy tail lamp, and the rear grab handle/carrier, will be carried over into the new Sunny. The new Sunny does not have a spare tire located on the floorboard, and there is no exhaust pipe on the right side. These are the key distinctions.

Bajaj Sunny to have a new EV framework based on Yulu

The new Bajaj Sunny electric scooter will probably be constructed on a brand-new EV platform that Bajaj and Yulu, a ride-sharing business in which Bajaj has invested, co-developed. Dex GR and Miracle GR, two electric scooter models that Yulu now sells, are both designed and made by Bajaj. In contrast to the Miracle GR, which is intended for personal use, the Dex GR is primarily a last-mile delivery vehicle.

A hub-mounted engine and a detachable battery system are used by the Yulu platform. Similar characteristics are anticipated for the upcoming Bajaj Sunny electric scooter but with improved performance and range. The test mule was witnessed leaving the traffic lights quickly and increasing to a top speed of 40 to 50 kilometers per hour. The Bajaj Chetak, which is currently the only e-scooter made by Bajaj in India, uses a 2.9 kWh battery, but the size and capacity of the new battery remain unclear.

The price tag is less than Rs 1 lakh

The Chetak, which competes in the e-scooter market’s premium class, will be positioned higher than the Sunny, which will be positioned lower. The Chetak is now more expensive than comparable petrol-powered scooters at Rs 1.42 lakh (ex-showroom). It is anticipated that the new Bajaj Sunny electric scooter will cost less than Rs 1 lakh (ex-showroom), making it more accessible and cheap for city commuters.

The new Bajaj Sunny electric scooter’s release date has not yet been set, however, it may occur in late 2024 or early 2025. The Hero Electric Optima, Ampere Reo, and Detel Easy Plus are just a few of the inexpensive e-scooters in India that the new Sunny electric scooter will fight against.
