Tata Punch EV spied on Indian roads for the first time

The Tata Punch EV has been recently spotted in the wild, marking its first public appearance. During the sighting, some intriguing new features were observed on the vehicle. On the outside, the test mule of the Tata Punch EV bears a striking resemblance to its petrol-powered counterpart.

However, one notable distinction is the inclusion of rear disc brakes, which might find their way into the regular Tata Punch model as well. Although the charging slot is not visible, it is expected to be located within the fuel lid, following the design approach seen in Tata’s other electric vehicles.

Built on the ALFA platform, the Tata Punch requires minimal modifications to transition from its current internal combustion engine setup to an electric powertrain.

While there is currently only one interior image available, it reveals that the Punch EV will feature an electronic parking brake and drive selector similar to the ones found in the Nexon EV Max. The touchscreen display remains unchanged at 7 inches, but there are possibilities for Tata to introduce their new 10.25-inch touchscreen, as seen in the Nexon EV Max Dark, in later iterations.

According to previous reports, the Punch EV is expected to adopt Tata’s Ziptron powertrain, consisting of a liquid-cooled battery and a front-wheel-drive configuration powered by a permanent magnet synchronous motor. Drawing similarities to the Tata Tigor, the Punch EV is likely to utilize a similar system, potentially offering different battery capacities to cater to various customer preferences.

Production of the Tata Punch EV is scheduled to commence in June, with a possible launch around October, aligning with the festive season. Currently, the Punch stands as Tata’s second highest-selling car following the Nexon, with 133,819 units sold in FY2023. The Nexon ranks fifth with 172,138 units sold. The Punch EV is projected to be priced between Rs 9.5 lakh and Rs 10.5 lakh.
