When compared to 8,668 registrations in 2021–2022, the number of electric vehicles (EV) registrations in the city of Pune during the most recent fiscal year (2022-23) increased by more than 200%. According to representatives of the Pune Regional Transport Office (RTO), this increase is unprecedented and a result of the booming the electric vehicles market. Additionally, they emphasised how the city serves as one of the main hubs in this situation.
Pune’s deputy RTO Sanjiv Bhor stated, “The EV market has been flourishing in the past two years. Of total electric vehicles registrations, the maximum are for two-wheelers. In the last financial year, registrations of 27,679 two-wheelers were recorded, against just 8,668 in 2021-22. This is an increase of over 219%.”
In addition to electric two-wheelers, a respectable increase in the registration of e-cars, autorickshaws, and other electric vehicles has been noted in 2022–2023.
The RTO registered 1,825 cars during this time period, compared to 961 during 2021–2022—a nearly 90% increase. In contrast to the 108 goods vehicles that were registered in 2021–22, 155 were registered in the most recent fiscal year. 42 e-autorickshaws were registered in the most recent fiscal year compared to only six in 2021–2022. It is still being done to compile data on these registrations under the Pimpri Chinchwad RTO. Over 46,000 electric vehicles (EVs) across all categories have been registered in Pune as of this writing. The amount is higher than the majority of RTOs in the state of Maharashtra.
An RTO official pointed out, “Getting enough charging stations might be a concern still, but that hasn’t stopped people from buying two-wheeler EVs. Most people charge these at home. Some models are better and one charge gives people enough mileage to move around the city for a full day.” The official added, “There has been a significant increase in prices of fuel of all types in the last two years, prompting people to opt for EVs. They can ride an e-bike easily for two or three years and recover its cost without spending a penny on fuel.”
Its worth noting that a CNG currently costs Rs 92 per kg in Pune, compared to Rs 105.91 for gasoline and Rs 92.43 for diesel per litre. The sale of special and chosen registration numbers brought in more money for Pune RTO during the previous fiscal year. Pune RTO made Rs 22.21 crore from this stream in 2021–2022 and Rs 38.02 crore in 2022–2023 as a result.
