Nitin Gadkari: More than 2.8 lakh EVs were sold in Jan to March 2023 in India

Nitin Gadkari, the Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, announced on Thursday that more than 2.78 lakh electric vehicles have been registered in the nation so far in 2023. According to Gadkari in a written response to the Lok Sabha, Andhra Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh are in the process of migrating to the Vahan portal, so their data on EV registration is only partially included. Telangana and Lakshadweep data is not available on the portal.

The number of electric vehicles (EVs) registered in India increased to 10,20,679 in 2022 from 3,29,808 in 2021. Nitin Gadkari stated that the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) planted 344.27 lakh trees under the Green Highways Policy from 2016-17 to 2022-23.

Nitin Gadkari stated that NHAI plans to build wayside amenities (WSAs) every 30-40 kilometres along brownfield national highways and greenfield motorways.

According to Nitin Gadkari, the ministry has facilitated applications for a grant of registration certificates to set up automated testing stations and registered vehicle scrapping facilities through the National Single Window System in order to promote ease of doing business for private investors (NSWS).

According to the minister, 18 states/UTs are currently accepting applications for the Voluntary Vehicle-Fleet Modernisation Programme (V-VMP) on NSWS. Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Chandigarh, Delhi, Goa, Gujarat, Haryana, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Odisha, Punjab, and Uttar Pradesh are among the states/UTs that rely on NSWS.

Nitin Gadkari claimed that out of 79 applications for the establishment of registered vehicle scrapping facilities across 17 states, the government has received 48 that have been approved by the relevant states. According to the information given by the minister, 8,220 used cars were scrapped in the nation between January 2022 and March 2023. Uttar Pradesh scrapped the eldest cars (6,247), followed by Gujarat (1,244) and Assam (357).
