Rivian recently revealed its quarterly electric vehicle production and delivery figures, which are marginally below the records noted in Q4 2022 but significantly better than a year ago. The company produced 9,395 battery electric vehicles (BEV) in the first quarter of 2023 at its manufacturing facility in Normal, Illinois, which is 268 percent more than in the same period last year.
The outcome is 625 units lower than Q4, but keep in mind that Q4 has its year-end rush. 7,946 vehicles have been delivered so far, according to Rivian (up 548 percent year-over-year). The outcome, in this case, is a little worse than in Q4 (by 108 vehicles). Rivian does not disclose specific model numbers, so these are the sum values for three BEVs: the R1T pickup, R1S SUV, and the Amazon EDV vans.
The R1T is still the most popular Rivian model
The first quarter was largely similar to the fourth, as shown in another chart, and it is likely that both production and deliveries will gradually rise through 2023. Since Q3 2021, Rivian has generated almost 35,000 electric vehicles and delivered over 29,000 of them. Almost all of the production to this point has been for the US market (deliveries in Canada started in November 2022).
Rivian did not mention the R1T/reservation R1S’s count in its Q4 2022 financial report (114,000 as of November 7, 2022), but it did mention that the net backlog of preorders goes all the way to 2024. Additionally, Amazon has a fleet of 100,000 vans (including 10,000 originally expected in 2022).
Rivian is simultaneously increasing production and developing its proprietary Rivian Adventure Network (RAN) DC fast charging network, but from what we’ve heard, it’s unlikely that 3,500 fast chargers will be installed at 600 locations across North America by the end of 2023.
