Baojun Yep EV: Launched in China Wuling, would be perfect for India

Have you heard about the Baojun Yep EV? The MG Comet EV, India’s smallest four-seater EV, is the newest competitor in the country’s burgeoning entry-level electric mobility industry. It is part of MG’s parent company’s global brand portfolio and made its debut in Indonesia as the Wuling Air EV.

However, China has received a new EV from the same company’s subsidies, the Baojun Yep EV from SAIC-GM-Wuling. According to the information accessible online, the Baojun Yep EV appears to be based on the same electric design as the Comet EV. It, too, is a three-door with a tall posture, but it has rugged off-roader SUV-like appearance with loads of cladding and a higher ground clearance than the MG offering in India.

In terms of technical features, the Baojun Yep EV outperforms the Comet EV in every way, including wheelbase.

It is said to include a 28.1kWh battery pack that powers a rear-mounted motor with 68PS and 140Nm. The Baojun Yep EV has a range of 303 km, which is adequate for a city-oriented offering.

We’ve had an ultra-compact EV with tech-laden premium interiors since MG delivered the Comet EV to our shores. The Baojun Yep EV’s cockpit follows a similar aesthetic, with a dual configuration of 10.25-inch monitors atop the minimalistic dashboard. It also includes the same configuration for the steering-mounted controls as the Comet EV, but with more durable button design. The accessory mounting slots on the co-driver’s side of the dashboard give a hint of Land Rover Defender influence.

Almost everything about the Baojun Yep EV is more likely to appeal to Indian car buyers than the MG Comet EV. It has SUV-like appearance that is far more popular than the eccentric looks of the MG offering, as well as improved ground clearance.

It should be roomier and more practical despite being an ultra-compact offering measuring less than 3.4 metres in length, thanks to its greater proportions. It only has a boot if you fold the back seats down like the Comet EV, but it also has some storage space beneath the hood thanks to climate insulation.
