Jaguar Land Rover and its ambitions of becoming an EV giant: Realistic or far fetched?

On Wednesday 19th April 2023, Jaguar Land Rover announced plans to invest £15 billion over the next five years in its industrial infrastructure, vehicle programmes, autonomous and artificial intelligence (AI) and digital technologies, and workforce skills. The company also intends to convert the Halewood plant in the UK into an entirely electric manufacturing facility, and the electrified modular architecture (EMA) that will power its upcoming medium-size SUV will now only be powered by electricity, according to a press release.

According to the company’s Reimagine strategy, the plan will help Jaguar Land Rover move closer to its financial objectives of achieving a net cash positive position by FY25 and double-digit EBIT by 2026. This strategy will reposition JLR as an electric-first, modern luxury carmaker by 2030.

The luxury automaker also disclosed that its Wolverhampton Engine Manufacturing Centre will soon transition to an all-electric future, producing electric drive units and battery packs for Jaguar Land Rover’s next-generation vehicles. According to a press release, it will now be known as the Electric Propulsion Manufacturing Centre to reflect the change.

In a move that further demonstrates JLR’s commitment to the future of the UK auto industry, the first of its next generation medium-size modern luxury SUVs will be an all-electric model from the Range Rover family, debuting in 2025 and constructed at Halewood in Merseyside.

The company’s vision is to become the proud creators of the most sought-after modern luxury automotive brands for the most discerning customers, and as a next step within the Reimagine strategy, Jaguar Land Rover will transition to a House of Brands approach to amplify the distinctive character of each of its brands, including Range Rover, Defender, Discovery, and Jaguar.

Jaguar Land Rover also revealed that a 4-door GT will be produced in Solihull, West Midlands, UK, as the first of three newly designed contemporary luxury Jaguars. The new Jaguar will be constructed on its own distinctive architecture, known as JEA, and will have a higher power output than any previous Jaguar model, a range of up to 700 km (430 miles), and a suggested starting price of £100,000. Later this year, more information about the new 4-door GT Jaguar will be made public before it goes on sale in a few markets in 2024 and is delivered to customers in 2025.
