India’s EV Sales Surge in 2025: Who’s Leading the Charge?

EV Sales (Electric vehicle) scene, you know it’s buzzing—but the latest numbers show it’s more like supercharging. According to fresh government data compiled by Fortune India, pure-electric car sales jumped 53% in the first half of 2025 compared to the same period last year. That’s over 74,000 new EVs quietly gliding onto Indian roads, alongside 52,000+ strong hybrid vehicles.

Winners and Surprises in the EV Race

The growth isn’t evenly shared—some brands are sprinting ahead while others are catching their breath.

  • JSW MG Motor: Sales tripled to 24,161 units.
  • Mahindra: Leaped 226% to 12,647 EVs sold.
  • Hyundai: Nearly 4,000 Creta EVs sold since launching the battery-powered SUV earlier this year.
  • Tata Motors: Still the market leader, but sales dipped from 33,175 last year to around 28,000 in H1 2025.
  • BYD: The Chinese player doubled its volumes to 2,461 units, showing that newcomers are serious contenders.

EVs Still a Small Slice of the Pie

Here’s the catch: despite the surge, EVs make up just 3% of India’s car market. But there’s an important tipping point ahead. Industry analysts believe that once EV penetration hits 4%, adoption could accelerate dramatically.

Meanwhile, hybrids are winning plenty of fans. Toyota alone sold over 42,000 hybrids in the same period—proof that efficiency matters to Indian buyers, even if they’re not ready to go fully electric.
