Strategic Infrastructure Rollout: Location is Everything
Smart Placement Strategy: The GHMC identified various locations in public areas like shopping malls, multiplexes, commercial complexes, and certain key areas with high public footfall to set up these EV charging centres, ensuring maximum accessibility for urban commuters.
Advanced Technology Integration: Each EV charging unit has high-speed charging with DC-001 (15KW) capacity and slow charging with C (122-150 KW) capacity facilities. For this, we need a 260 sft area where two vehicles can be charged at a time.
Comprehensive Infrastructure Expansion Plan
| Infrastructure Component | Current Status | Target by 2025 | Key Features |
|---|---|---|---|
| Operational Stations | 90 stations | 180 stations | 100% growth |
| Under Construction | 40 stations | Completed | Revenue-sharing model |
| New Proposals | 50 stations | Implementation | CCTV surveillance |
| Technology | DC-001 (15KW) + AC slow charging | Enhanced capacity | Renewable energy powered |

Security & Safety: First-of-its-Kind Initiative
Anti-Theft Measures: All these charging units will soon have surveillance facilities to ensure the safety of the charging equipment. “We are concerned about incidents of materials being stolen from the EV charging units and have discussed it with the police. According to their advice, we decided to instal CCTVs at every EV charging unit to prevent theft,” said a TGREDCO official.
National Context: Leading India’s Charging Revolution
Record Infrastructure Growth: In a defining moment for India’s electric mobility revolution, EV sales soared to 19 lakh units in 2024, marking a 19% increase over 2023, accompanied by a record expansion of 25,202 public charging stations nationwide.
Government Support: The launch of the ₹10,900 crore PM E-DRIVE scheme in October 2024 includes ₹2,000 crore for public charging stations, accelerating their reach and usability across the country.
Telangana’s EV Leadership
Comprehensive State Policy: The Government of Telangana announced the Telangana Electric Vehicle and Energy Storage Policy in 2020, with a vision to make Telangana a preferred investment destination for manufacturing electric vehicles and reducing carbon emissions.
Impressive Statistics:
- 425 charging stations currently operational across Telangana
- 600 charging stations planned under PPP model in next 3 years
- 111 public charging stations available in Hyderabad as of 2024
- 1600 acres of industrial land allocated for EV manufacturing
Revenue Model & Sustainability
Public-Private Partnership: These units will be installed on a revenue-sharing model as mutually agreed upon by the GHMC and TGREDCO, ensuring sustainable operation and maintenance.
Green Energy Powered: All the EV charging centres operate with renewable energy, aligning with Hyderabad’s zero-carbon city vision and environmental sustainability goals.
Individual Participation Opportunities
Business Opportunities: According to TGREDCO officials, individuals who have plot sizes ranging from 300 to 500 square yards could approach REDCO for establishing EV charging stations and start a business, democratizing the charging infrastructure development.
