Mahindra’s INGLO Platform: A Platform Built for the Future
In an exclusive interview with Mobility Outlook, R Velusamy, President of Automotive Product Development at Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd, emphasized that the INGLO platform was developed with a singular focus: maximizing efficiency and usability for electric vehicles. Unlike many existing EV platforms that adapt traditional architectures, INGLO was designed from the ground up specifically for electric vehicles.
Key Features of the INGLO Platform
- Balanced Weight Distribution: The INGLO platform features a 50:50 weight distribution, achieved through a rear-wheel-drive configuration and a centrally located battery pack. This design enhances handling and stability, providing a superior driving experience.
- Innovative Steering System: A standout feature is the Variable Gear Ratio (VGR) steering system, which ensures smooth steering dynamics even under demanding conditions, addressing the challenges of maintaining precision with a balanced weight distribution.
Breaking Barriers in Range and Efficiency
One of the most significant concerns for EV users is range anxiety, and the INGLO platform addresses this head-on. With battery options of 59 kWh and 79 kWh, it offers impressive range capabilities within its category. The advanced LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate) battery chemistry, combined with standardized cell-to-pack technology, ensures long-term durability, reliability, and safety.
Fast Charging Capabilities
The INGLO platform also boasts fast-charging capabilities. With a 175 kW DC charger, the battery can charge from 20% to 80% in just 20 minutes, making it ideal for both urban commutes and long road trips.
Powertrain Innovation for Enhanced Performance
At the heart of the INGLO platform is a compact three-in-one powertrain that integrates the motor, inverter, and transmission. This innovative setup delivers outputs ranging from 170 to 210 kW for rear-wheel drives, ensuring unmatched acceleration and agility. Whether navigating city streets or cruising on highways, vehicles built on the INGLO platform promise a dynamic and exhilarating driving experience.
Low Center of Gravity for Improved Safety
The battery pack’s low center of gravity (CoG) addresses common challenges associated with high CoG in SUVs. By integrating the battery pack into the underbody, Mahindra has created a protective cage around the passenger cabin, enhancing safety while contributing to a lighter, more agile driving experience.
A Fusion of Global Innovations
Velusamy highlighted that the INGLO platform effectively combines the technological advancements of Chinese innovation with the robust engineering heritage of Europe. By leveraging Chinese expertise in battery technology, lighting, and augmented reality systems, Mahindra has created a platform that delivers high performance alongside advanced connectivity and safety features.
Advanced Suspension Systems
The INGLO platform supports semi-active suspension systems that adapt to road conditions in real time, ensuring optimal ride comfort and handling. This adaptability enhances the overall driving experience, making it suitable for various body types and configurations.
Overcoming Engineering Challenges
Designing a skateboard platform for EVs involves optimizing strength and weight. Mahindra addressed this challenge by utilizing boron steel, which provides high tensile strength while minimizing weight. This balance is crucial for meeting crash safety standards, achieving extended range, and ensuring agile handling.
Proprietary Suspension Architecture
To accommodate a low-slung battery pack, Mahindra developed a proprietary suspension architecture featuring a five-link rear suspension system. This design enhances stability without compromising ride comfort, further elevating the driving dynamics of vehicles built on the INGLO platform.
Scalability and Future Prospects
One of the INGLO platform’s standout features is its scalability. Designed to accommodate multiple models with fixed wheelbases, tracks, and rooflines, this flexibility allows Mahindra to develop a diverse range of vehicles without significant retooling. This adaptability opens up new possibilities for catering to different market segments.
Efficient Manufacturing Processes
The design principles of the INGLO platform prioritize manufacturing, assembly, and service efficiency. Fully automated production lines ensure consistent quality and reduced production costs, making INGLO vehicles cost-effective and appealing in competitive markets.
The Human Element Behind the Innovation
The success of the INGLO platform is a testament to the dedication of Mahindra’s engineering and design teams. Developing such a sophisticated platform required immense commitment, often at the expense of personal time. Velusamy noted, “A company of Mahindra’s stature could not afford to lag in the EV race,” highlighting the urgency behind this innovation.
A Paradigm Shift in EV Architecture
The launch of the INGLO platform signifies a paradigm shift in how electric vehicles are designed and manufactured. By combining global best practices with innovative solutions, Mahindra has positioned itself as a serious contender in the electric mobility space.
Looking Ahead
The journey doesn’t end with the INGLO platform. Mahindra’s engineers are already exploring advancements such as fully active suspension systems and enhanced sensor integration for future iterations. Each vehicle release is viewed as an opportunity to learn and refine, ensuring that INGLO remains at the cutting edge of EV technology.
With the INGLO platform, Mahindra is not just catching up to global EV players; it is setting a new standard for innovation, scalability, and performance. As the automotive industry transitions toward electric mobility, platforms like INGLO will play a crucial role in shaping the future of sustainable transportation.
