India’s Four Upcoming Skoda and Volkswagen EVs

As expected, the majority of the EV launches that Skoda and Volkswagen India have planned are SUVs, which are exactly what Indians are currently looking for. Skoda Auto Volkswagen India Pvt Ltd (SAVIPL) is preparing to manufacture a variety of popular electric vehicles at its Chakan plant.

Both Skoda and VW have yet to debut electric vehicles (EVs) in India, and they have been having difficulty offering the VW ID.4 and Skoda Enyaq at reasonable prices for some time. An entry-level EV for India, code-named PEAK EV, was also under consideration by the Volkswagen Group. This project investigated creating a Tata Nexon rival in the Rs 15 lakh–20 lakh range utilizing VW’s MEB21 platform, a less expensive front-wheel-drive version of the group’s rear-drive MEB design.

Four Upcoming Skoda and Volkswagen EVs in India

1. Skoda Enyaq

Skoda’s flagship vehicle, the Enyaq, was on display at the 2024 Bharat Mobility Expo. The exterior has wraparound LED taillights, an integrated spoiler, black accents, and alloy wheels with an aerodynamic design. The SUV has two electric motors that together produce 265 horsepower and a 77kWh battery pack.

The MEB platform, which is shared with the Volkswagen ID.4, serves as its foundation. Nine airbags, ESC, TPMS, and a 360-degree camera are among the safety features. A 13-inch touchscreen infotainment system, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a panoramic sunroof, a head-up display, a massage-activated driver seat, heated front and back seats, and three-zone climate control are among the technological highlights.

2. VW ID.4

VW had stated that the ID.4 will be the company’s first electric vehicle to be introduced in our nation later this year, but we haven’t heard anything more about it since. Since VW currently has no plans to manufacture it in India, the car will probably be imported through the CBU method.

Depending on sales, VW will then determine whether to localize any of its parts. It will be propelled by a motor that produces 300 horsepower and 500 Nm, and it will have an 82kWh battery pack with a range of up to 500 miles. Its maximum speed is 180 kmph, and it can accelerate from 0 to 100 kmph in 6 seconds. It will have a large 12-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless smartphone connectivity, as well as a digital driver display.

3. Skoda Elroq

The Skoda Elroq EV, the company’s first small SUV, is the other well-known BEV. It is anticipated to launch in India in 2026 or sometime next year. The SUV will ride on the VW group’s MEB platform and measure about 4.5 meters in length. This is also anticipated to be a CBU, at least initially, and may change to a CKD path depending on demand.

4. The Skoda Epiq

Earlier this year, a concept of the Skoda Epiq that is ready for production was revealed. It is anticipated to be the first iteration of Skoda’s A0 BEV and will inherit many of its features, design characteristics, and powertrain options. Given that the Epiq concept is 4.1 meters long, Skoda may be able to produce a version that is less than 4.0 meters, making this a vital vehicle in the Indian market. This will then compete with vehicles such as the Mahindra XUV400 EV and the Tata Nexon EV.
