Karnataka emerges as India’s hub for EV charging, having the most stations: Report

There are 5,765 EV charging stations in all of Karnataka, with 4,462 of them in Bengaluru city. According to a new report from the Bureau of Energy Efficiency of the Union Energy Ministry, Bengaluru has emerged as the city with the best infrastructure for electric vehicles, having the most number of EV charging stations in all of India. Since Karnataka enacted its first ‘EV Policy’ in 2017, the state has seen a sharp increase in the number of people adopting EVs. This is especially the case for regular users, such Swiggy and Zomato delivery workers, and courier service workers who only utilize electric two-wheelers.

Upgrading the infrastructure for EV charging

BESCOM (Bangalore Electricity Supply Company) has installed a number of EV charging stations throughout government office buildings, including BBMP, TTMC, and BDA offices. The city’s network of charging stations has also been enhanced by private businesses, who have placed stations for their corporate cars at strategic spots.

A notable improvement in Electric vehicle owners’ accessibility is the expansion of charging stations inside residential apartment buildings. The first electric vehicle charging station under the ‘JOULE’ (Joint Operation Unifying Last-mile Electrification) project was recently opened by private enterprises in Bengaluru’s Doddakallsandra, marking a significant improvement.
