Kia opens its first devoted EV facility in South Korea

The first specialized electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing plant in the Hyundai Motor Group has launched at the Kia Gwangmyeong EVO Plant, thanks to Kia Corporation. Situated in Kia Autoland Gwangmyeong, this recently established plant spans more than 60,000 square meters and can produce 1,50,000 electric vehicles annually. According to the company, a KRW 401.6 billion (about INR 2,559.32 crore) investment has been made, and the new plant will produce the company’s line of electric vehicles.

As soon as the Gwangmyeong EVO Plant is finished, the company said it will start producing EVs more quickly. In the early half of this year, the compact all-electric SUV known as the EV3 went into mass production. The EV3 is the brand’s all-electric crossover SUV, which made its global premiere in 2021. The EV9, Kia’s flagship all-electric SUV, will make its Indian debut on October 3. In the near future, Kia intends to launch the mid-sized electric vehicle, known as the EV4, during the first half of 2025.

Kia’s New EV Plans

“With the company’s brand relaunch in 2021, the completion of the Gwangmyeong EVO Plant solidifies Kia’s first step as an EV leader.” “We will lead innovation in the EV market and fulfill our responsibilities in helping to deliver a sustainable future with the goal of providing sustainable mobility solutions,” said Jun Young Choi, Executive Vice President and Head of the company’s Domestic Production Division, in her welcoming speech at the event.

According to the firm, it took almost a year to convert the Gwangmyeong Plant 2, which was first finished in 1987 for the production of compact internal combustion engine (ICE) automobiles. With this modification, the location is now the group’s first EV production factory and serves as a hub for next-generation electric vehicles.
