BIS Unveils New Guidelines To Improve EV Security In India

The objective of the two new standards, IS 18590: 2024 and IS 18606: 2024, released by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) is to improve the quality and safety of electric vehicles (EVs) in the L, M, and N categories. These standards ensure vital parts like batteries and powertrains satisfy strict performance and safety requirements. To protect the safety of drivers and passengers, BIS has also proposed IS 18294: 2023 for e-rickshaws and e-karts, which covers their design and operation. With these latest additions, BIS now has thirty standards covering EVs and their accessories, which is a significant contribution to the promotion of eco-friendly and effective transportation in India.

Implementing these guidelines is a big step in the right direction for improving the quality and safety of electric cars in India. These standards ensure that electric vehicles (EVs) on Indian roads are safe and dependable, which increases customer confidence and speeds up EV adoption. They do this by imposing strict safety criteria on batteries and powertrains. BIS’s all-encompassing approach to electric mobility is demonstrated by the standards for e-rickshaws and e-karts, which provide accessibility and safety for a larger audience. All throughout the nation, sales of electric vehicles are increasing in various areas.

More and more attention is being paid to the safety of EV battery packs and other parts. In recent years, a number of fire accidents involving various electric vehicle models have sparked worries across the nation. Fire issues were frequently caused by defective designs, malfunctioning battery packs, or malfunctioning components within the electric vehicle’s thermal management system. BIS has implemented new criteria to guarantee that electric vehicles are safer than they were to lower the number of these incidents.
