Nissan declared last week that it will go on competing in the Formula E Championship until 2030. Nissan has been a competitor in the electric racing series since Season 5, which took place in 2018 and 2019. According to their most recent commitment, Nissan will continue to race in the championship through Season 16, which will take place in 2029 and 2030. Nissan will have participated in an FIA-sanctioned racing series for the longest this time.
Nissan has committed to race the next-generation Gen4 race car, which will debut in Season 13 and be available in 2026 and 2027, making them the first team to do so. Nissan is assisting in the vehicle’s development. Porsche isn’t committed to Formula E past Season 12, although the carmaker is still interested about the development. Similar to its predecessors, the Gen4 race car will be shared by all teams, but some parts, especially in the powertrain, will be customizable.Â
The automobile will be able to give more power and faster charging than the current Gen3 model, according to organizers. Another important factor will be increased safety. 804 horsepower in power output and up to 938 horsepower in regeneration capacity are among the performance goals.
Nissan’s Formula E crucible
Formula E offers Nissan and other participants in the sport a chance to develop electric vehicle technology and test it in some of the most demanding situations available. During last week’s 2024 New York auto show, Ponz Pandikuthira, senior vice president and chief planning officer of Nissan North America, spoke to Motor Authority and said the company is using Formula E participation as a test bed for developing the next-generation GT-R’s powertrain. However, he added that Nissan hasn’t decided on the type of powertrain the car will have yet.
The announcement of Lola Cars’ resuscitation as a new Formula E competitor and Nissan’s most recent committment to the series coincide. In time for Season 11 of Formula E, which begins late this year and runs through 2025, Lola and Yamaha will join forces.
