In an effort to increase its market share in Southeast Asia, China’s BYD, a leader in the world market for pure electric vehicles (EVs), introduced three new electric passenger cars here on Thursday.
Three battery-powered, eco-friendly products—DEAL, ATTO 3, and Dolphin—that have been produced in large quantities and shipped to almost 70 countries were unveiled by BYD during the launch in Jakarta.
General Manager of BYD Asia-Pacific Auto Sales Division Liu Xueliang stated, “This is an extraordinary moment for the company as we officially present ourselves to Indonesian consumers to offer innovative new energy vehicles with sustainable benefits.”
What are BYD officials saying?
Eagle Zhao, president and director of PT BYD Motor Indonesia, claims that Indonesia is one of the nations leading the way in implementing trends, such as programs to employ electric vehicles to cut pollution.
“We see this as a positive step, and with our technological innovation, the company wants to contribute to shaping societal behavior as part of the new energy ecosystem,” he stated. Zhao stated that the company currently has seven dealer networks in Indonesia and plans to raise that number to 50 by the end of the year. “We will accelerate the construction of a manufacturing plant in Indonesia starting this year,” Zhao said.
The country’s Coordinating Ministers for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto and Maritime Affairs and Investment Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan praised BYD’s decision in Indonesia and spoke via video during the launch event.
According to Pandjaitan, the government and the company signed a memorandum of understanding in May of last year in China about the growth of Indonesia’s EV ecosystem. Pandjaitan expressed his expectation that BYD will further advance the ecosystem and the growth of Indonesia’s electric vehicle (EV) sector. According to Hartarto, the company is still being urged by the government “to increase the utilization of local content so that it can encourage industrial competitiveness.”
