A ‘congestion fee’ for Tesla’s supercharger stations is reportedly planned, per a media report. This is in response to a 2019 upgrade from Tesla, which reduced the car’s charge to just 80% in an effort to shorten the charging time, particularly during peak hours.

According to the company, cutting the charging to 80% would significantly reduce charging times because most users only charge their devices to 80% of their capacity and only charge the remaining 20% gradually. However, this feature was quickly changed to enable owners to manually reset the charging to 100%. The automaker is currently developing a “congestion fee” for these manual adjustments, though.
The most recent software update from Tesla for the Superchargers is reportedly going to set the state of charge to 80%. If EV owners wanted to increase the charging limit, they would have to pay more. The precise sum that will be assessed as a “congestion fee” is unknown, though.
The “Supercharger Idle fee,” which is now in place and applies when a car is parked even after it has finished charging, would be in addition to the new price.
