Ducati might soon start producing lower capacity EV motorcycles

The last major European manufacturer to enter the market for motorcycles with smaller fuel tanks is Ducati. When the company eventually produces its first electric two wheelers, that could change. BMW, Triumph, KTM, and even MV Agusta have partnered to create a line of affordable, low-capacity motorcycles. Even Harley Davidson, the king of powerful, intimidating motorcycles, has adopted this strategy.

Ducati has been the last major, premium international brand to refuse to produce smaller bikes, but that may change in the years to come.

The company believes that there is interest in a few different types of EVs, according to a recent interview with Marco Biondi, who is the head of sales and marketing for Ducati APAC. Additionally, he stated that Ducati believes there will be a market for electric bikes with 35kW (47.5hp) and even 11kW (15hp) of power.

“For now you know we are very much involved in MotoE so we learn a lot about this kind of technology. Because what we produce for the teams racing in MotoE is simply for an end-customer and is not affordable.”

Biondi also made it clear that Ducati would want to maintain their premium positioning and the core values associated with their products even if they were to look at these segments. “Today, the technology is simply not there. Bikes need to be light and they need to do 250km range, otherwise it doesn’t make sense. We have it in the plans, but if and when this happens is not clear yet.”
