Rising sales of electric vehicles are being attributed to the transition to green energy in India. However, India might not have the necessary infrastructure to meet the demand brought on by the growing use of electric vehicles.
India had 5,254 public electric vehicle (EV) charging stations as of January 23, 2023, to support a total of 20,65,00 EVs. This is supported by the information provided by Minister RK Singh in the Lok Sabha as well as the Vahan dashboard. According to this, there is one public charging station for every 393 electric vehicles in the nation.
According to a white paper by Alvarez and Marsal, a global professional services firm, released in July 2022, “The global ideal EV/public chargers ratio is also around 6-20 EVs per public charger, whereas, in India, it currently stands at an estimated 135.” According to the report, the EV to charger ratio in 2022 will be six in China and the Netherlands, and nineteen in the United States. The paper also advocated for the installation of approximately 46,000 additional charging stations across the country.
While a greater number of electric 2- and 3-wheelers, which are typically charged at home, reduces the need for public charging stations in India, the number of public charging stations does need to increase. The ministry stated that 316 charging stations were added in FY20 and 1,742 in FY21.
Even though this report wasn’t mentioned, the ministry said that “Action plans for 9 major cities have been prepared by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) for installation of public charging stations. As per the initial estimates, a total of 46,397 public charging stations (PCS) are being targeted in these cities by 2030.”
Karnataka has the most Electric Vehicle charging stations in the country (774), followed by Maharashtra (660), Delhi (539), and Tamil Nadu (442).
However, according to Vahan data, 4.5 lakh of the country’s EVs are registered in Uttar Pradesh. However, the state only has 406 public EV charging stations, leaving one charging station for every 1,103 electric vehicles. The majority of electric vehicles in Uttar Pradesh, 4.06 lakh in total, are electric three-wheelers, which include e-rickshaws. In addition, the state has 43,036 electric two-wheelers. In addition, the number of electric cars and other large vehicles in the state is quite low.
Maharashtra, Delhi, Karnataka, and Rajasthan had the next-highest numbers of EVs registered as of February 7, 2023, with 2.12 lakh, 1.97 lakh, 1.71 lakh, and 1.36 lakh, respectively. Similar to Uttar Pradesh, Delhi and Rajasthan have a large number of two- and three-wheeled electric vehicles.
However, compared to electric cars, the proportion of electric three-wheelers is lower in Maharashtra and Karnataka. Karnataka and Maharashtra each have 10,249 electric vehicles. 43 of the charging stations are located on 17 National Highways. The NH-8 route from Karimganj in Assam to Sabroom in Tripura has nine charging stations, while the NH-11 route has eight.
