Volkswagen ID.2all EV concept revealed

Volkswagen’s long-awaited affordable electric car has arrived, albeit in concept form, and it’s nothing like the ID. Life, which premiered in September 2021. It’s called the ID. 2all, and it’s a first look at Volkswagen’s future EV, which will be available in Europe in 2025 for less than $26,400 (€25,000). Looking at the photos, it’s clear that this is a pre-production study rather than a futuristic concept car.

At the same time, the Volkswagen ID. 2all appears to be more familiar to brand aficionados than the ill-fated ID. Life, which the top brass in Wolfsburg avoided. Is it going to be called ID. Golf when it’s finished? That is likely given VW’s confirmation of a sub-$21,000 (€20,000) EV, most likely the Cupra UrbanRebel twin.

The ID. 2all is now a significant vehicle for Volkswagen for two obvious reasons. The first is the targeted price, which will allow VW to enter a large market segment, and the second is the ID.2all is based on Volkswagen Group’s MEB Entry platform for front-wheel-drive models. The production model will thus be the brand’s first FWD MEB model.

According to Volkswagen, the ID. 2all has “particularly efficient drive, battery, and charging technology.”

The front-mounted engine produces 166 kilowatts (222 horsepower), which is comparable to the power found in a base VW Golf GTI. This allows for Golf GTI-like acceleration from 0 to 62 mph (100 kph) in under 7 seconds.

While the battery capacity is not disclosed, the automaker claims a range of up to 280 miles (450 kilometres) on the WLTP test cycle. We also learn that at DC fast-charging stations, the battery can be charged from 10% to 80% in 20 minutes. The ID. 2all can also be charged at up to 11 kW at home or at public AC charging stations.

The MEB Entry platform is housed in a five-door hatchback that is 9.2 inches (234 millimetres) shorter than the current Golf hatchback. The ID. 2all measures 159.4 in (4,050 mm) long, 71.3 in (1,812 mm) wide, 60.2 in (1,530 mm) high, and has a wheelbase of 102.3 in (2,600 mm), which is less than an inch shorter than the wheelbase of the Golf Mk8.

The ID. 2all also has a head-up display, a separate air conditioning control panel under the main screen (with illuminated buttons), and two large inductive charging interfaces for smartphones on the centre console, as well as two magnetic holders with inductive charging function in the front seat backrests. In addition, the centre console houses a rotary dial that controls other vehicle functions.

Furthermore, the EV concept features new power seats with massage functions as well as a new multifunction steering wheel with two thumbwheels on the left and right and two buttons each. Throughout the cabin, there are numerous USB-C interfaces (45 watts), as well as a fully functional 230 V socket for powering larger devices.
