Yes, you heard that right, we are talking about Nano EV, Tata Motors is betting on the electric future and has already become the best-selling brand in India when it comes to EVs because it was the first player. However, as multiple players are entering the space like Mahindra, PMV, MG, Hyundai, Kia and BYD, to maintain its market leadership, TATA Motors has to remain creative.
So, heavy speculations say, there are high chances that TATA Motors might actually tap into its once-hyped TATA Nano. It was originally thought to be the most affordable Indian car, specifically made for the Indians but it couldn’t live up to its hype somehow. However, its brand value and the way Nano was deemed as the go-to car for middle-class households, Nano could well be revived but as an EV this time.
TATA Motors can tap into the affordable EV space of India with Nano EV
As we all know the major problem with EVs is their expensive battery costs almost costs 30-40%, so essentially if you have made the car more affordable it has to be compact, lightweight and small. So, you might have seen the recently launched PMV electric car that has become the most affordable Indian EV at Rs. 4.79 lakh and offers up to 200 km range for the top model.
On top of this, MG Motors is all set to launch the compact MG Wuling Air or Air EV in India as soon as next year and it could again be in that Rs.10 lakh price segment. To make matters worse for TATA Motors, the french car brand Citroen will be bringing the EV version of the highly charming C3 compact SUV to India next year seeing the growing demand for EVs in the country.
Seeing all these TATA Motors has already launched its most affordable Tiago EV at its introductory price of Rs.8.49 lakh but if they have to target even more average Indian households they have to go all into the Rs.5-6 lakhs price bracket. So, TATA Motors’ Nano EV could indeed be a reality sometime as per industry rumours and the brand could heavily see the potential of this budget EV which got electrised for Mr. Ratan Tata already.
The acquisition of the Ford plant in Maraimalainagar and its increase in investments towards EVs as well as making EV batteries in India will help the conglomerate to make Nano EV a dream come true. The power of colonising its sister brands like Tata Power, Tata ELXSI, Tata Chemicals and other subsidiaries could even help Tata Motors to make the Nano EV one of the most affordable EVs Indians have ever seen.
